You just spent good money on a custom laser engraved tumbler. Maybe it is a brand new Yeti you picked out for your morning commute, or perhaps it is a gift from a friend that features a really sharp logo. Whatever the case, you want it to look just as crisp a year from now as it does today.
A lot of people worry that if they scrub their cup too hard or put it in the wrong place, the design will just fade away. Honestly, I get it. We see a lot of drinkware here at our shop in New Braunfels, and we have spent years testing exactly what works and what does not. The good news is that laser engraving is not a sticker or a cheap print. It is a permanent mark. Still, even the toughest engraving deserves a little respect if you want to keep it looking perfect.
Why laser engraving is different
Before we talk about cleaning, we should clear up a common myth. Some people think laser engraved drinkware has a coating on it that might peel off if they use the wrong sponge. That is not how it works. When we use our lasers here in Central Texas, we are actually removing a tiny layer of the powder coating or metal to reveal the stainless steel underneath.
Because we are exposing the metal, there is no ink to fade and no decal to bubble up in the heat. Your design is literally part of the cup now. That makes it incredibly durable. However, the powder coating around the engraving can still be scratched if you are not careful. Here is how you keep your gear in top shape.
The golden rule of cleaning
If you are wondering how to clean laser engraved tumblers the right way, the answer is simpler than you might think. Hand washing is your best friend. Look, I know we all love the convenience of a dishwasher. It is easy to just toss everything in and hit a button. But dishwashers are rough.
Between the extremely high heat and the harsh chemicals in dishwasher pods, you are asking for trouble. Those pods are basically designed to strip grease and food, and they are strong enough to dull the finish of your custom tumbler over time. If you want to maintain laser engraved cup quality, just use warm water and a little bit of mild dish soap.
Grab a soft sponge or a microfiber cloth. Avoid the heavy duty scrub brushes or the scouring pads that feel like sandpaper. Even if the engraving itself is tough, the powder-coated surface around it can get hairline scratches if you use something too abrasive. A gentle wipe is usually all it takes to get that coffee ring or water spot off.
Dealing with stubborn stains
Sometimes, life happens. You leave your tumbler in the truck during a hot San Antonio summer or you forget to wash out a protein shake for two days. When the inside gets a bit funky or the outside gets sticky, you might be tempted to reach for the bleach or steel wool. Please do not do that.
Bleach can damage the stainless steel, and steel wool will absolutely ruin the look of your cup. Instead, reach for white vinegar or baking soda. If the inside of your cup is stained, pour in a little warm water and a tablespoon of baking soda. Let it sit for about ten minutes, give it a light scrub with a non-scratch sponge, and rinse it out. It works like a charm every time.
For the outside, if you have a sticky residue from a spilled drink, just use a damp cloth with a tiny drop of dish soap. If the engraving itself has some debris caught in it, use a soft bristled toothbrush. The bristles are gentle enough not to scratch the coating, but firm enough to clear out anything stuck in the texture of the engraving.
Drying is just as important as washing
You might think drying is not a big deal, but it is. Letting your cup air dry upside down on a rack is fine, but make sure it has airflow. If you leave it sitting on a flat surface without ventilation, moisture can get trapped under the rim or in the crevices of the lid.
If you are using a nice custom bottle or mug, take an extra ten seconds to wipe it down with a soft towel after you wash it. This prevents hard water spots from forming on the metal. Since we live in an area with pretty hard water, those spots can sometimes make the laser engraving look cloudy. A quick dry keeps that high-contrast look that makes your custom design really pop.
What to avoid at all costs
We have seen some pretty creative ways people ruin their drinkware. Let me save you the heartache. Never put your laser engraved drinkware in the freezer. While stainless steel is strong, the extreme cold can expand or contract the metal and the vacuum seal in a way that breaks your cup.
Also, avoid using cleaners that contain ammonia or any harsh chemical degreasers. These are designed for glass or industrial floors and they are just too aggressive for a personal drink container. Stick to the basics. Mild soap and warm water are all you need to keep your gear looking great for years.
Keep it looking fresh
At the end of the day, your custom drinkware is a tool. You should use it every day. You do not need to baby it, but a little common sense goes a long way. Treat it like a quality piece of equipment, and it will take care of your coffee or cold water for a long time.
